Social, Ethical, and Legal Issues - Turnitin

Assignment 2 in IT 365 was a Turnitin assignment about the gender gap and gender bias that is in the technology world of today. The first part of the assignment was to copy and paste information from websites into the document and post it to Turnitin. The point of this was to learn how plagiarism can be detected with software like Turnitin, and plagiarism can be a factor in failing the exercise, the class or even being expelled from school. The second part of the assignment was to write another document and only paraphrase in our own words. This document was turned in to Turnitin and a plagiarism score was generated. My score was less than 25%, like way less, so I was happy and turned it in to our instructor. I think this was an interesting exercise, and I learned a lot of information about the existence of a gender gap and a gender bias between the males and females in the technological fields. This assignment ties into the ISTE standard to facilitate and inspire student learning, where teachers engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources by having students explore turnitin and learning about plagiarism. This exercise also ties into the ISTE standard to promote and model digital citizenship where students learn respect for copyright laws and use the appropriate documentation of resources. This exercise ties to the common core standards research to build and present knowledge, production and distribution of writing, integration of knowledge and ideas.

ISTE Standards

The standards are not easy to read and understand, so I had to read through them several times.

ISTE Standards - International Society for
Technology in Education
Teachers

Effective teachers model and apply the ISTE Standards for Students (Standards•S) as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community. d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
3. Model digital age work and learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation
c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats
d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning

These standards are for teachers to know and understand what they need to teach to students in the technologically based world that we live in today. Although I am not very computer smart, I am willing to learn and advance my computer knowledge. I want to be technologically smart as I can be, so I can include technology in my future classroom.

Concept Map Update

I was very confused when we started working on concept maps that first night in class. It took me a little while to begin to understand the Kidspiration software. Although I got a lot of work accomplished on my concept map that first night, there is still a lot of work left on it before I will have it finished. Most of my brainstorming for ideas is finished, so most of the work that I have left is to tweek a few things on the map, such as changing the fonts of the writing, changing some of the colors of the direction arrows, and maybe changing some of the types of cells. I'm looking forward to the next class, so I can finish my concept map. When it is finished, I will post it in my blog.
POST #2:  I promised an update on my concept map, and here it is. I'm pretty proud of it! I hope you like it, too. Learning how to do a concept map on Kidspiration will be helpful because this is something I will be able to teach my future students. It was a learning process, but it was fun, too.            This reflects the ISTE Standard #1a and #1c, where teachers use their knowledge of subject matter to facilitate learning by using creativity and innovation in virtual environments and using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes. A concept map shows that students can use their own ideas to be creative and express them in a fun, engaging activity such as a concept map. An effective teacher will follow the ISTE Standard to facilitate and inspire students learning and creativity, and this can be done by teaching students to make a concept map. This assignment ties to the ISTE Standard to design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments. It also ties to the ISTE Standards to model digital age work and learning, promote digital citizenship and responsibility, and inspire students to learn and be creative by using computers. This assignment ties to the common core standards presentation of knowledge and ideas by having students make strategic use of digital media and displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.
This was so much fun, I'm ready to make some more! At first it was difficult to understand the Kidspiration software, but once I started my concept map it got easier and easier. I really enjoyed making my concept map, and I think any student would enjoy using Kidspiration for a project. It would be great software for any school system that has young children using computers in a classroom.

Introductory 1st blog

Hello fellow classmates! My name is Robin Jeffrey, and I'm very excited about meeting everyone that is in my Computer Applications for Education class. I have a confession to make: I am computer stupid. Stupid might be a little harsh, so maybe I should say computer ignorant, or computer no comprende. Don't get me wrong, I can email and get through a word document (barely), but I definitely need a class on computer operations. I hope that I am not the only one, and I am hoping that I might learn more about computers from this class.
The picture on the right was the only one I had access to at the moment. I will add google +, so I can access the pictures on my phone. You might have guessed that I am the one on the right. The handsome man with me is my boyfriend, Tony. That was last December when we were at Bellingraph Gardens for the Christmas light show. He is an engineer on a seismograph ship, so he is offshore 5 weeks and home 5 weeks. When he is home, we spend all our time together. We both love to go out in the bass boat; he fishes; I read. We love going to the hunting camp and riding the four wheeler through the woods at night, or day. It's more scarier at night! When he's not home, I focus on my school work; spend time with my mom and my two dogs. One of my hobbies is rock and fossil collecting; I have rocks with sea dwellers in them and one that looks like an acorn. I also love to do jigsaw puzzles, sudoku puzzles, and travel anywhere.
My career goals are to graduate from USM in elementary education with endorsements in Science and Social Studies. I plan on incorporating technology in my classrooms because that is the world we live in today. Computers are everywhere and everyone needs to be computer literate. I may need to take some basic computer courses before I start teaching!! Good luck to everyone! SMTTT
